Why real innovation needs products, teams, commercial models and operating discipline, not just labs, hackathons and a wall of sticky notes.
Most organisations have far more innovation activity than innovation output. Labs, hackathons, accelerators, innovation days, strategy offsites. The calendar is full. The product portfolio is not.
The problem is never a shortage of ideas. It is a shortage of the operating discipline it takes to turn an idea into something that works in the real world.
What innovation theatre looks like
Innovation theatre has a familiar shape. A nicely branded space, a programme name, a process that moves ideas through stages of increasing polish. Everyone is enthusiastic. The sponsor turns up to the showcase. The outputs look promising.
Then the quarterly review lands. The "innovation projects" are not making money. They are not in the core business. Nobody owns their commercial performance. They fade, and the next cohort kicks off. I have sat in that review more than once.
What actual venture building takes
Building a venture, whether inside a corporate, a government entity or as a standalone startup, needs five things innovation programmes rarely provide in full.
A clear commercial hypothesis: not "this technology is interesting" but "this customer will buy this product at this price for this reason."
Product discipline: the ability to decide what to build, build it, learn from real users and iterate, repeatedly, not once.
Operational ownership: a team that wakes up accountable for the venture's performance, not for the innovation programme's metrics.
Governance that enables speed: decision-making that lets a venture move fast while keeping the organisation informed enough to stay comfortable.
Capital patience: the recognition that ventures take time to become viable, and that killing them at the first hard quarter destroys the investment in the ones that would have made it.
This is unglamorous work. It is also the only kind that produces ventures that last. Innovation only counts when it survives contact with operations.
